During the 2010-2011 academic year we are managing 31 CEIP and schools in Barcelona, Baix Llobregat and Vallès Oriental. Over 5,000 students, teachers and staff benefit from our healthy lunches on a daily basis.
Healthy School Meal Program We’re proud of Menjador Escolar Sostenible (MES), our innovative sustainable catering project, and we expect it will grow into other similar programs. In addition to providing job opportunities and training to individuals traditionally excluded from the workforce, our program (launched in November 2005) brings new ideas and a fresh perspective to the world of school meals. We welcome you to contact us to learn more about what we’re up to (click on the contact link below), but the four categories below will give you a general idea of our sustainable school meal fundamentals: • Nutrition: nature, taste, quality and health • Environment: sustainability, waste reduction, recycling, reusing, ecological cleaning products • Social and Cultural: responsible consumption, fair trade, social equity and cultural diversity • Education: training in nutrition and consumption, personal independence and socialization For example during the 2006-2007 school year, 1200 students benefited from this unique service, which brings social consciousness and health to schools with every meal. All of the fruit, rice, legumes and vegetables (50% of which are organically grown), pasta, couscous, quinoa, spices, and sugar are fair trade products. All milk products come from the La Fageda cooperative in the La Garrotxa region of Catalonia, which employs disabled workers. The consumption of fresh fruit, vegetables, white and blue fish and whole grains is emphasised, while greasy foods, sugars, and fried or precooked meals are avoided. Kitchens are run with ecologically sound standards such as comprehensive recycling, waste minimization, the use of gentle detergents and biodegradable plates and tableware. As well, each school staff employs a previously labour-excluded worker. We currently manage 18 kitchens in nursery schools and CEIP schools. About 3.000 students, teachers and school staff benefit daily from the MES program. For more information about the MES project click here We welcome you to contact us at
